This study aims to analyze the unique narrative structure and image utilization in Han Kang’s novel The White Book (The White Book) through the lens of Gilles Deleuze’s “Time-Image” theory, specifically focusing on the concept of the “Crystal-Image.” Transcending traditional narrative boundaries by blending poetry, prose, and photography, The White Book embodies non-linear time (Aion) rather than chronological time (Chronos). This paper argues that the novel constructs a crystal of time where life and death, as well as the past and the present, coexist through the imagery of “white things.” First, the list of “white things” in the novel functions not merely as an enumeration of objects, but as “Crystal-Images” in which the past as the virtual (the deceased sister) and the present as the actual (the narrator) coexist in a state of indiscernibility. Through images such as swaddling bands, baby clothes, and shrouds, the author blurs the boundary between life and death, condensing existential debt and trauma within a mirror structure where the two reflect each other.
Furthermore, this study traces how these time-images, rather than remaining static, evolve into a narrative of mourning and recovery through the “serialization of time.” The shifting narrative strategy—moving from the first person to the third, and finally to the second person—is not a simple change in perspective but a process of “becoming,” where the subject unites with the other (the deceased sister) to move toward new life. Ultimately, The White Book creatively reconstructs individual loss and the historical wounds of Warsaw through the “powers of the false,” demonstrating that true mourning is not the confirmation of loss but an ethical decision toward becoming.
