This study analyzes the recontextualization of Korean folktale and minhwa (folk painting) iconography in the Netflix animated film K-POP Demon Hunters (hereafter KPDH). While existing scholarship has primarily focused on the work’s commercial success, its strategic deployment of cultural capital, or its narrative structure, this paper examines how KPDH receives and transforms traditional iconography at the level of visual signifiers — including color, background imagery, and character design. Drawing on C. S. Peirce’s semiotics (icon/index/symbol) and Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin’s theory of remediation as its analytical framework, the study establishes two axes of comparative analysis: the narrative iconography of the folktale The Siblings Who Became the Sun and Moon, and the minhwa iconographic tradition of Ilwolobongdo (the Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks Screen) and Hojakdo (Tiger and Magpie paintings).
The analysis yields the following findings. First, KPDH recontextualizes Ilwolobongdo — originally a Joseon royal icon of dynastic authority — by combining it with the “Golden Barrier” (hwanggeum honmun) to serve as a background icon that visually legitimizes the authority of the older generation’s hunter system. The mythic connotations of gold as completion and immutability function as an ideological device that naturalizes normative order; yet the very act of concealment — embodied in Selin’s repeated attempts to hide Rumi’s demon markings — exposes that order as a fragile structure sustained only through suppression. Second, KPDH generates a new figuration, Derpy, by crossing the folktale’s tiger — a signifier of external threat — with the ambivalent tiger iconography of minhwa. Inheriting the whimsical, non-threatening qualities of the Hojakdo tiger tradition, Derpy dismantles the fixed symbolic equation of tiger-as-terror and instead functions as an affective mediator that enables the protagonist Rumi to safely approach the otherness within herself. The rainbow-colored barrier (mujigaetbit honmun) that Rumi ultimately completes — achieved by transforming her demon markings into sovereign energy and harmonizing with the saingeom (ritual sword) — stands as an iconic declaration of growth understood not as assimilation into a single norm, but as the integration of heterogeneity.
Through this analysis, the study confirms the methodological value of employing both folktale and minhwa iconographic traditions as comparative reference points when analyzing traditional iconography in contemporary cultural content. It further demonstrates that Korea’s traditional narrative resources can function, within the global media environment, not merely as displays of “Koreanness” but as living visual languages capable of engaging universal questions of subjectivity.
