Organizations face an environments of continuous and accelerating change. An Increasingly pervasive response to this experience is to engage in some form of downsizing.
Our research contends that without strategic approach to downsizing, downsized companies can't achieve a reduction in overall labor costs and increase in productivity. So managers must plan and execute a well-orchestrated strategies of downsizing in their organizations.
A strategic approach to downsizing requires that managers
⑴ formulate a vision of the future of the organization
⑵ clearly define downsizing goals
⑶ take actions to develop member's ability
⑷ continuously communicate with unions and members, in order to share with vision, goals, and downsizing methods
⑸ design incentive systems necessary to support member's behavior change.
