Batch and continuous ethanol fermentation by Zymomonas mobilis was studied using free and Ca alginate-immobilized cells, respectively.
The growth of free cells was affected by higher concentration of ethanol, and a product-inhibited kinetic model was developed as follows;
μ=23.05 S/(0.22+S)(86.0+P).
The maximum ethanol concentration was 90.7g/L and the yield was 0.482g/g with initial glucose concentration of 200g/L.
The continuous fermentation was performed in packed-reactors to investigate the effects of inlet glucose concentration. dilution rate, and bed height on the ethanol productivity. The maximum specific ethanol production rates were 1.63 and 1.06g/g. h with inlet glucose concentration of 100 and 200g/l, respectively. The ethanol yield was around 0.44g/g.
