「벼(稻)」와 그 단어족 연구 = Remarks on the Word 'Pyo˘('paddy')' and its Derivatives

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In pre-Old Korean the form of the word 'byo˘('paddy') would be *pas which corresponds to Turkic basˇ ('head'). Both *pas and basˇhad originated from the Common Altaic word *bal^2. In Middle Korean, the form of *pas has changed to pjo˘s and, after losing the finals it has become pjo. Since Middle Korean pjo˘s has also meaned 'the cockscomb' and has had the derivatives pjo˘s??l/pjo˘s??l which means 'official rank'.
Through the alternation *pas has changed to various forms and derivatives such as as ('the first'), mas ('master'), masu ('the first'), mari/mo˘ri ('head'), m??r?? ('ridge'), m??r??m/m??r??m ('estate agent'), m??t ('the eldest'), mad??i ('upside') etc.
