네트워크로 보는 중견국 외교전략 = 구조적 공백과 위치권력 이론의 원용

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper applies network theories, which gain much attention recently in the field of natural and social sciences, to theoretical discussion concerning middle power’s diplomatic strategies in International Relations. Existing studies have mainly understood the concept of middle power and surrounding structure in terms of individual actor’s attributes or power resources possessed by those actors. Thus, they have neglected to understand the category of middle power in the context of network as structure, which are constituted by actors themselves. In this context, this paper pays attention to theories of “structural holes” and “positional power” that provide the studies of middle power with theoretical resources concerning structural attributes of networks and actor’s positional roles given by such structural conditions. Along with providing a theoretical platform for middle power’s strategies, this paper briefly presented some empirical cases of the East Asian regional politics, in which two Koreas and four great powers--the United States, China, Japan, and Russia--are main players.
