안무방법론 개발을 위한 LMA(Laban Movement Analysis)의 적용성 연구 = A Study on Practical Application of LMA for Development of Choreographic Methodology

This study aims to examine how choreographers create dance through using LMA (Laban Movement Analysis) which is one of choreographic methodologies. Choreographers can apply the concept of LMA in order to enrich their imagination. Therefore I tried to study with a certain choreographer who is familiar with LMA through the process of her work. LMA is an experiential and theoretical approach to movement, developed by Rudolf Laban and his pupils. LMA consists of vocabulary, concepts, and principles that describe both the quality and quantity of human movements and can help us recognize the meaning of movements. Many contemporary choreographers, such as Pina Baush, William Forsythe, already use the Laban`s theory apply to their work. The motive of this piece ``Purple Rain`` is symbolic of purple which is adversity, temper and silence. In this piece, I will try to present yearning- recuperation-calm through three different section. The choreographer wanted to each section has to have a certain mood according to each theme. For this, the choreographer made progress by using LMA. And this process can be so for entire rehearsals. First, I discussed with the choreographer to grasp the point theme and mood of the piece and then I suggested elements of LMA in order to express her thought and emotion effectively. Second, the choreographer creates movements and acts of dancers, and decide to designing of visual and light through using the elements of LMA. Also the choreographer might think about sound and music as well. Through this study, I demonstrated how to create movement using LMA and I found LMA is one of comprehensive system in the field of dance. Therefore both choreographer and dancer can understand the concepts and elements of movement in order to express the theme and mood of their work of dance. In addition, I will present the possibility that dance theory, such as LMA, can be practically applied to choreographies for stage just as they are for dance. I hope many choreographers get new ideas for their work through this study.
