한 유물론자의 성서 읽기*-임화의 시에 나타난 ‘신성(神聖) 비틀기’와 전유 = A Materialist’s Mode of Reading the Bible: ‘Twisting of the Sacred’ and Appropriation in Im Hwa’s Poetry

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 카프의 대표적 유물론자였던 임화의 문학에 나타나는 종교 담론을 ‘신성(神聖) 비틀기’와 ‘전유’의 관점에서 분석함으로써 그의 시적 사유와 윤리적 지향을 새롭게 조명한다. 임화는 종교를 비판의 대상으로 삼았으나, 성서의 권위와 구조를 창조적으로 차용하고 전복하여 자신의 유물론적 세계관에 부합하는 새로운 윤리 담론을 구축하는 독특한 방식을 택했다. 본고는 임화가 종교를 반대했다는 일견 당연한 사실 너머에서 그의 사상이 시라는 문학적 형식 속에서 어떻게 구현되고 전략적으로 변모하는지에 집중하여 그가 구축한 유물론적 윤리의 독자성을 심층적으로 규명하고자 한다.
이를 위해 본 연구는 임화의 대표작인 시 ｢적｣, ｢지상의 시｣, ｢다시 인젠 천공에 성좌가 있을 필요는 없다｣, ｢구름은 나의 종복이다｣를 핵심 텍스트로 분석한다. ｢적｣에서는 복음서의 ‘원수를 사랑하라’는 계율이 어떻게 종교적 위선을 폭로하고 계급투쟁의 윤리로 비틀어 전유되는지 고찰함으로써 발터 벤야민이 말한 ‘의도의 중단’을 통해 언어를 의도에서 해방시켜 진리가 발현되도록 하는 과정이 이 시에 드러나 있음을 밝힌다. 또한 ｢지상의 시｣에서는 요한복음의 ‘태초의 말씀’을 인용하되, ‘말’과 ‘행위’를 상호 번역 가능한 범주로 재구성하여 초월과 내재, 관념과 실천의 이분법을 넘어선 독창적인 시학적 원리를 제시하고 있음을 살핀다.
｢다시 인젠 천공에 성좌가 있을 필요는 없다｣와 ｢구름은 나의 종복이다｣는 초월적 기표가 퇴조한 상황에서 인간의 감각, 언어, 상상력을 기반으로 한 새로운 윤리적 감응의 가능성이 임화의 시에서 어떻게 탐색되는지 보여준다. 특히 ｢구름은 나의 종복이다｣에 드러나는 유희적 상상력과 능동적 주체는 초월적 명령 대신 인간의 실천적 힘으로 시대를 감당하려는 임화의 사유를 압축적으로 형상화한다.
궁극적으로 본 연구는 임화의 ‘신성 비틀기’ 시학이 단순한 이념적 선언이나 반종교적 배척의 차원에서 행해진 것이 아니라, 초월적 권위가 무력화된 시대에 인간적 윤리와 역사적 실천을 문학적으로 재구성하려는 치열한 시도였음을 논증한다. 이를 통해 임화 문학이 지닌 (반)종교적 사유의 복합성과 그 속에서 유물론적 윤리가 형성되는 과정을 규명함으로써 임화 시에 대한 해석적 지평을 확장하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study reexamines Im Hwa’s poetic thought and ethical orientation by analyzing the religious discourse in his literature through the concepts of ‘twisting of the sacred’ and ‘appropriation.’ As a leading materialist of KAPF, Im Hwa regarded religion as an object of critique; yet he employed a distinctive method that creatively borrowed and subverted the authority and structure of the Bible, thereby constructing a new ethical discourse aligned with his materialist worldview. Moving beyond the taken-for-granted view that he merely opposed religion, this article focuses on how his thought is realized and strategically transformed within the literary form of poetry, with particular attention to the distinctiveness of the materialist ethics he developed.
The analysis centers on the poems Enemy, Poem of the Earth, No More Need for Constellations in the Sky, and The Cloud Is My Servant. In Enemy, the Gospel injunction to “love your enemies” is twisted to expose religious hypocrisy and appropriated as an ethic of class struggle. This reveals a process—closely connected to Walter Benjamin’s notion of the suspension of intention—by which language is liberated from intentionality so that truth may emerge. In Poem of the Earth, while citing the Johannine phrase “In the beginning was the Word,” the poem reconstitutes “word” and “act” as mutually translatable categories, presenting an original poetic principle that transcends the dichotomies of transcendence/immanence and idea/practice.
The subsequent poems show how, in a situation where transcendent signifiers have receded, Im Hwa’s poetry explores the possibility of new ethical responsiveness grounded in human sense, language, and imagination. In particular, The Cloud Is My Servant highlights playful imagination and active subjectivity, embodying Im Hwa’s conviction that it is through human practical power, rather than transcendent command, that one must confront the demands of the age.
Ultimately, this study demonstrates that Im Hwa’s poetics of “twisting of the sacred” was not a mere ideological pronouncement or anti-religious rejection, but an intense literary attempt to reconstruct human ethics and historical praxis at a time when transcendent authority had lost its efficacy. By clarifying the complexity of (anti-)religious thought in Im Hwa’s literature and the process through which materialist ethics was formed, the article seeks to broaden the interpretive horizon of his poetry.
