출산율과 교육투자에 기초한 소득불평등의 지속성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 78개국의 국가 간 통계자료를 이용하여 소득불평등의 세대 간
지속성을 설명하기 위한 전달경로로 출산율과 교육투자의 유효성을 실증적으
로 검토하였다. 선행의 이론적 가설에 의하면 소득불평등이 심화될수록 소수
의 부유한 사람들에 의한 출산율은 감소하고 다수의 가난한 사람들에 의한
출산율은 증가할 수 있다. 또한 교육투자의 양과 질의 상충관계로 인해 출산
율과 인적자본 투자 간에는 음(-)의 관계가 성립한다. 실증분석 결과 초기의
소득불평등(1970년경의 소득지니지수)과 출산율 간에는 통계적으로 유의한
양(+)의 관계가 형성되는 것으로 관측되었다. 또한 초기의 소득불평등과 출산
율은 교육투자(중등교육기관 취학률)에 통계적으로 유의한 음(-)의 영향을 미
치는 것으로 추정되었다. 그러므로 현재의 교육투자가 미래의 소득불평등을
결정하는 주요한 요인임을 감안할 때 소득불평등이 출산율과 교육투자라는
전달경로를 통해 세대 간 지속될 수 있다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다(JEL :
