글로벌, 로컬 그리고 젠더 - 지구화 시대 공간에 대한 새로운 이해를 위하여 = Global, Local and Gender: For a New Understanding of Space in the Age of Globalization

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study analyzes the relationship between the global and the local, a topic which recently has gained importance in the study of space in the age of globalization. In a situation in which the traditional spatial division in the form of public=male space and private=female space has newly been reproduced in the modified form of public=global=male space and private=local=female space, this paper criticizes the tendency of gendering which identifies certain spatial areas with a certain gender. Thus, it also criticizes today’s situation in which women are mainly described as victims of globalization, even though they are appearing as active agents at respective places.
In chapter 2, this study scrutinizes the view which considers the relationship between the global and the local as dichotomic, and points out the problems of this perspective. Chapter 3 engages from the gender perspective with the shortcomings and limitations of the view that perceives global as male and local as female. Chapter 4 focuses on the importance of the local and of locality from the gender perspective, because our lives are happening mostly at local areas despite of the globalization. Lastly, I emphasize that we need to imagine alternative spaces that allow the highest possible degree of gender equality.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목적은 지구화 시대의 공간 연구에서 새롭게 주목을 받고 있는 글로벌과 로컬 스케일의 관계를 젠더의 관점에서 분석해 보는 데 있다. 공적 공간=남성의 공간, 사적 공간=여성의 공간이라는 젠더에 따른 전통적 공간 분리가 지구화 시대를 맞아 공적 공간=글로벌 공간=남성의 공간, 사적 공간=로컬 공간=여성의 공간이라는 방식으로 확대되어 나타나고 있는 가운데, 특정한 공간에 특정한 성별을 부여하려는 젠더화 경향이 산출하는 문제점으로 시선을 돌려보고자 하는 것이다. 그리고 이를 통해 각자가 위치한 장소에서 여성들이 지구화의 주요한 행위자로 그 모습을 드러내고 있음에도 불구하고, 주로 지구화의 희생자로 묘사되는 상황에 비판적으로 접근해 보고자 하는 것이다.
이를 위해 먼저 2장에서는 글로벌과 로컬을 이분법적으로 바라보는 시각이 어떤 문제점을 안고 있는지를 살펴본다. 이어지는 3장에서는 글로벌=남성, 로컬=여성이라는 방식으로 이루어지는 지구화에 대한 해석이 젠더의 관점에서 어떤 한계를 안고 있는가로 시선을 돌린다. 그리고 4장에서는 지구화에도 불구하고 로컬의 중요성을 간과할 수 없다는 점에서 로컬과 로컬리티의 의미를 젠더의 관점에서 탐색한다. 마지막으로 결론에 해당하는 5장에서는 젠더의 관점에서 다른 공간 상상하기, 즉 사회적 공간으로서의 지구라는 공간을 다른 삶을 열등하게 만들지 않고 살아갈 수 있는 세상으로 만들어 나갈 필요가 있음을 강조한다.
