Research on ‘Claim Shack’ as Women Homesteaders’ Early Settlement in the West in the 1900s

This article examines claim shacks as one of the typical building structures in the homestead landscape, focusing on women homesteader houses in the West in the early 1900s. It argues that we need to pay attention independently to ‘claim shacks’ as an example to understand the process of women homesteaders’ migration and settlement to the West in the early 1900s. The main purpose of this paper is to document different types of a building structure called ‘claim shacks’, including dugouts, sod shacks, and frame shacks, and log shacks. Focusing on claim shacks as an important type of built environment in the homestead examines the process of women homesteaders’ migration and settlement in the West in early 1900s. Women have played a pivotal role in shaping the western homesteading environment and influencing the course of Western history. Yet, more often than not, their voices and marginalized or missing from the historical record and interpretation. This paper adds more stories of women to the history of the early homesteading experiences in the West.
