클라우디우스 황제의 군제개혁과 브리타니아 원정 = Roman Emperor Claudius’s Millitary Reformation and Expedition to Britannia

국문 초록 (Abstract)

로마 제국의 세 번째 황제인 가이우스는 점차 독재적인 모습으로 변하면서 근위대에게 암살당했다. 가이우스 암살 이후 원로원과 콘술이 황제의 후계 구도에 대한 논의를 진행하는 과정에서 근위대는 클라우디우스를 황제로 선언했다. 클라우디우스는 자신을 암살하려는 공포심을 진정시키고자 자신의 통치를 정당화해야 했다. 결국, 클라우디우스는 집권 강화를 위해 진력하였는데 특히 군권의 확립은 가장 먼저 선결되어야 할 클라우디우스의 정치적 과제였다. 이를 위해 클라우디우스는 군제개혁을 주도했는데 이는 브리타니아 원정을 위한 준비작업이었다. 클라우디우스는 왜 브리타니아를 정복하고자 했는가? 첫째는 클라우디우스는 자신의 신체적 장애를 극복하고 로마에서 새로운 통치자로서 지위를 확보하고자 브리타니아 원정을 부활시킨 것이다. 둘째는 일종의 사회복지 프로그램으로 로마군의 퇴역 병사들에게 군 복무에 대한 보상으로 토지를 할당해주고자 했다. 셋째는 브리타니아 부족 출신의 정치적 망명자들을 구출하기 위한 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Gaius, the third emperor of the Roman Empire, was assassinated by the praetorian guards as he gradually turned into a dictatorial figure. After the assassination of Gaius, in the process of discussing the succession structure of the emperor, the praetorian guards declared Claudius as emperor. Claudius had to justify his rule to calm his fear of assassinating him. In the end, Claudius worked hard to strengthen his power, especially the establishment of military power was the first political task to be preceded. To this end, Claudius led the military reform, which was a preparatory work for the Britannia expedition. Why did Claudius want to conquer Britannia? The first was that Claudius revived his expedition to Britannia to overcome his physical disability and secure his position as a new ruler in Rome. Second, as a kind of social welfare program, it was intended to allocate land to retired Roman soldiers as compensation for military service. The third is to rescue political exiles from the Britannia tribe.
