한·중 마고 전승 비교 연구 = A Comparative Study on the Transmission of Mago in Korea and China

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 한국선도의 ‘마고’ 전승과 원형을 살펴보고, 한국선도 마고관의 중국적 변형에 대해 살핀 것이다. 한국선도의 기본 원리는 삼원조화사상이며 수행의 목적은 천인합일(신인합일)을 이루는데 있다. 우주의 근원적인 생명에너지를 움직여 사람과 만물을 창조한 하느님(삼신하느님)이란 존재가 바로 ‘마고’이며, 마고가 존재했던 마고성이 바로 천인합일(신인합일)의 공간이다.
이러한 마고의 가장 원형적인 모습은 선도사서 『부도지』에서 찾을 수 있으며, 요서지역 상고문화의 핵심이 바로 선도 마고제천이었음을 고고학적 유물⋅유적을 통한 연구 결과가 보여주고 있다.
한⋅중 마고 전승의 구체적인 모습을 비교해 보면, 한국의 마고는 우주를 창조한 근원적인 생명에너지로 모든 현상을 있게 한 창조주 하느님(삼신하느님)이었는데, 후대로 전승되면서‘할머니창세신’의 모습으로 변이되었고, 창세 행위의 일종인 ‘성쌓기[축성]’하는 모습으로 많이 남아 있다. 그럼에도 삼신하느님으로서의 위상이 전승되어져 오늘날 제천단⋅사당의 신격으로 모셔져 사람들에게 제천의 대상이 되고 있다.
이에 반해 중국의 마고선녀는 아름다운 외모에 신통한 도술력을 지녔고, 불로장생하는 여자 신선의 모습으로 그려지고 있으며, 창조신 이미지나 성쌓기하는 모습은 나타나지 않고 있다. 필자는 이를 한국선도의 마고가 중원지역에서는 중국도교의 영향으로 불로장생하는 아름다운 선녀 이미지로 변형되어 전승된 것으로 보았다. 한국에서도 마고선녀 전승이 나타나는데, 이는 중국도교의 한국 유입으로 인하여 한국에서도 도교풍의 마고선녀 전승이 나타나고 있는 것으로 보았다. 한국선도 ‘마고(마고할미)’를 중국도교 속 ‘마고선녀’와 동일선상에서 단순 대비 하기에는 무리가 있겠다. 하지만, 성별 미분화 상태의 중성적 이미지를 지닌 ‘마고 (마고할미)’ 전승이 아름다운 여성적 이미지를 지닌 ‘마고선녀’ 전승보다 더 원초적 古形을 유지하고 있어 시적으로 앞선다고 보았다. 한국의 선도가 중원 지역에서 중국도교 형성에 영향을 주었기에, 따라서 한국선도의 마고가 중원으로 흘러가서 중국도교의 영향으로 도교화되어 마고선녀로 전승된 것으로 보았다. 한국선도의 마고(마고할미)는 중국도교의 마고선녀와 전승되는 모습이 서로 다르기는 하나 그 근원적인 뿌리는 상통하고 있다고 바라보기에, 모든 ‘마고’ 관련 전승의 원형은 선도사서 『부도지』에 등장하는‘마고’이며, 근대 고고학의 성과가 이를 뒷받침해주고 있음을 살펴보았다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is to scrutinize the archetype and the transmission of 'Mago' in Korean Sundo, and to research on the chinese modification of Mago. The basic principle of Korean Sundo is "Three-Dimension Harmony Theory". The purpose of the training is to establish Heaven-Human-Combined-In-One (God-Human-Combined-In-One) state. The One who had created human and all other things by moving fundamental vitality of the Universe is Haneunim(Samsin Haneunim), in other words, 'Mago'. The Great City of Mago where Mago had existed was the space of Heaven-Human-Combined-In-One. We can find the most archetypal form of Mago in 『Budoji』.
Mago of Korean Sundo had been transmitted by legendary story in which 'Mago Halmi' builds mountain fortress walls. Later on, she has been worshiped as a god in the altar of the sacrificial rituals for Heaven or in the shrines. Mago of China is described as a beautiful female immortal who has miraculous powers.
Mago of Korea had been HaNeuNim(SamSin HaNeuNim) who created the Universe by the fundamental vitality which resulted all the phenomena. As time passed by, she has been changed as a 'Grandmother Creator', and remained as a figure who wanted to go back to the Great City of Mago by 'building mountain fortress walls'. In China, it is very different from Korea. Instead of a creator or building mountain fortress walls, she appears as a beautiful female immortal. It seems that Mago had flowed to the center of China and have been changed as an image of a young beautiful woman who never dies or even getting old. Strangely, Mago Fairy can be found in Korea, too. It is presumed that she has been reimported by way of Chinese Taoism.
It would be immoderate if we simply compare 'Mago' of Korean Sundo with 'Mago Fairy' of Chinese Taoism on the same line. But Mago of 『Budoji』 who had have ambiguous distinction of sex have kept original form rather than Mago Fairy, it is regarded Mago was far older historically than Mago Fairy. As Korean Sundo had influenced at the time when Chinese Taoism was formed in the center of China, naturally Korean Mago transmission also flowed to the center of China and became Mago Fairy by the influence of Chinese Taoism. Although the present forms of Korean Mago(Mago Halmi) and Chinese Mago Fairy are different, the archetype of Mago transmission is Mago myth of 『BuDoJi』, therefore it is certain that the fundamental roots have something in common.
