      Since 2002, Korean high school music textbooks have included popular music. However, it is not easy to find a successful story regarding popular music education. Pointing out the lack of educational curriculum and musicological research on popular music, this paper deals with how popular music should be taught and studied. This research consists of two parts. The first part examines the educational approach to popular music, interrogating a popular music curriculum at Aalborg University Centre, Denmark. The second part examines the musicological approach to popular music, focusing on the semiotics of music suggested by Dunbar-Hall. According to him, two different approaches of semiotics -analytical semiotics and interpretative semiotics- will contribute to developing a holistic understanding of popular music, emphasizing the authentic characteristics of popular music. This paper, in the final chapter, comparatively examines two different popular music researches, which were used as textbooks in the general education course <History of Rock Music>, at the University of Texas at Austin from 2001 to 2004.
