해외체류경험과 외국어 사용 능력에 따른 문화간 감수성 수준의 차이 (경기지역 대학생을 중심으로) = Differences of Intercultural Sensitivity amongcollege students of different foreign language abilityand staying experience of foreign countries(Focused on the college students of Kyunggi Province)

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The development of ‘global village’ in the 21st century demand the intercultural competence that has depended upon the intercultural sensitivity. The purpose of the study is to provide current figures of intercultural competence of Korean youth measuring intercultural sensitivity. Intercultural Sensitivity Scale(ISS) developed by Chen and Starosta was administered to 310 youth attending University located at Kyunggi province in Korea. Using t-test and ANOVA, the mean of intercultural sensitivity among groups based upon gender, staying experiences of foreign countries, length of stay in foreign countries, level of foreign language proficiency has been analyzed. It found that college students in Kyunggi province showed highist scores in the section of respect for cultural differences in ISS that was composed of five sections; ① interaction engagement, ② respect for cultural differences, ③ interaction confidence, ④ interaction enjoyment, ⑤ interaction attentiveness. It also found that the mean differences of intercultural sensitivity scores among the different groups of foreign language proficiency were meaningful in the section of interaction engagement and interaction confidence. And the mean differences of intercultural sensitivity scores between the groups of having experiences of stay in foreign countries and no experience group of stay were meaningful. Based on these findings researcher discussed the possibile ways to improve intercultural sensitivity for college students and proposed some possible theme for further studies. Potential limitations of the study were discussed as well.
