Li- and Mn-rich layered oxides (LMROs), generally formulated as xLiTMO2·(1–x)Li2MnO3, are attracting significant attention as next-generation cathode materials due to their high theoretical capacity (≥ 250 mAh g−1). This high capacity originates from both cationic redox reaction of transition metals and anionic redox reaction of oxygen. Furthermore, Co-free LMROs offer cost-competitiveness and superior thermal stability compared to Ni-rich cathodes.
LMROs suffer from severe voltage fading primarily due to the reduction of Mn and the associated layered-to-spinel phase transition during high-voltage cycling. In this study, we first investigate how different cycling upper cut-off voltages (UCV) regulate this phase transition behavior. Cycling at 4.8 V accelerates Mn reduction and structural transformation into a spinel-like phase, resulting in rapid voltage decay. Lowering the cycling UCV effectively suppresses the progression of this phase transition, thereby improving voltage retention.
Based on these findings, the formation UCV was systematically optimized to regulate the degree of Li2MnO3 activation. At 4.8 V, the Li2MnO3 domain becomes excessively activated, leading to oxygen release, structural collapse, and substantial irreversible lithium loss. However, a formation UCV of 4.5 V resulted in insufficient activation, causing additional activation to occur during subsequent cycling and producing abnormal cycling behavior. Notably, formation at 4.6 V provided the necessary level of Li2MnO3 activation while effectively suppressing the initial structural damage associated with over-activation. This optimal voltage achieves a balance between the initial activation reaction and structural stability, thereby significantly enhancing the long-term electrochemical performance.
This study highlights the importance of voltage window engineering and demonstrates that careful tuning of formation and cycling voltages is a simple yet highly effective strategy to control Mn-driven phase transition and enhance the long-term performance of LMROs.
