This study aims to analyze the effects of playing activities related to traditional children's songs on children's prosocial behavior and to apply them to a teaching method for improving young children's sociability. For these purposes, the following research questions were formulated.
Question 1: What effects do playing activities relate to traditional children's songs have on children's prosocial behavior?
Question 2: Is there a difference by the distinction of sex in the effects of playing activities related to traditional children's songs on children's prosocial behavior?
The subjects of this study were 34 five-year-old children selected from a public institution nursery school in K city, Jeonbuk. They were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (17 children) or the control group (17 children). The period of the study was from March, 13, 2008, to April, 29, 2008, and the study was carried out in the order of pre-test, seven week's experiment and protest. Both the experimental group and the control group had a total of 14 sessions for learning traditional children's songs for 7 weeks (two sessions per week), and then the children in the experimental group participated in playing activities related to traditional children's songs while the children in the control group participated in activities related to things in everyday life.
In order to measure children's prosocial behavior, we used ‘The Prosocial Behavior Scale of Young Children (PBSYC)' developed by Kim Young-ok (2003). In addition, this study analyzed the mean scores of the pre-test and the pro-test for the groups through t-test and two way ANOVA using SPSS 12.0 Windows Version.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, there were very statistically significant differences between the experimental group and the control group. In addition, the experimental group showed statistically significant differences in all of the sub-factors of prosocial behaviors, ‘leadership’, ‘helping’, ‘communication’, ‘initiative consideration’ and ‘sharing’, comparing with those of the control group. that is, the experimental group showed better prosocial behaviors than the control group.
Second, There were not any differences between boys and girls, who participated in playing activities related to traditional children's songs. And, there isn't any interaction on prosocial behaviors between sex distinction and the groups.
As a result of utilizing playing activities related to traditional children's songs for children, the subjects were interested in activities which constituted both songs and play, and they led the play repeatedly and voluntarily. In that process, they learned traditional children's songs naturally and had a positive effect on prosocial behavior by playing together.
Accordingly, these results suggest that the application of playing activities related to traditional children's songs can be an effective teaching method for improving children's sociability.
