The purpose of study were to analyze the elementary school teachers' views on the appointment, role performance, and role conflicts of chief- teachers. Based on this analysis, the researcher intended to find out the effective ways of the chief-teachers' performing their roles. For the purpose of this study, the researcher conducted a questionnaire survey to 131 chief-teachers and 350 teachers located in Gyeong-Nam Province. The research problems were: what are the teachers' viewpoint on the appointment of chief-teachers, chief-teachers' performance on their roles, and chief-teachers' role conflicts. Main results of this study were as follows:
First, in relation to the method of appointing the chief-teacher, general teachers(having no position), female teachers, and teachers with short experience thought it unreasonable. This finding suggests that appointment of superintendent teachers is highly probable to cause conflicts among teachers.
Second, most of the teachers thought the number of chief-teachers in their school suitable, but teachers who worked at small-sized school thought it short
Third, in relation to the important criteria for appointment of chief-teachers, the teachers put the highest value on the driving force for a given work, which was followed by suitability for the given work, by human nature and affinity, and then, by teaching experience.
Fourth, the respondents positively thought chief-teachers' performance on their roles. Especially, the respondents thought that chief-teachers were doing a good job as interpersonal relation promoter and as work professional, but they thought chief-teachers' performance as leader or supervisor relatively inferior.
Fifth, the chief-teachers positively thought their performance of their roles, especially, as the work professional
and the interpersonal relation promoter. On the other hand, they thought their performance of the roles of leader or supervisor was relatively small
Sixth, when chief-teachers perform their task, they perceived more role conflicts with following school personnel with order: the principal, the assistant principal, other chief-teachers, and general teachers who work at the same section. Particularly, they perceived role conflicts strongly because of the assistant principal's authoritative working way.
