This thesis has studied the whole structure of the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong to focus on the spatial consciousness. Meanwhile, the study on the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong has been fulfilled in various ways but never on the whole spatial structure of the poetic world. Particularly, it's one of shortages of the previous studies that even the discussion of the unessential space on the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong has been mainly focused on made in the poetry of the sea and ones of the mountains in the "Backrokdam". Under such a critical mind this thesis has made progress in my study in order to find out the whole spatial structure and the spatial consciousness of the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong, based on the results of the existing various studies.
This thesis has laid emphasis on a research to the meanings of interaction in each world, sublating an attempt of the preceding researchers who would understand to mean that the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong is the composition of confrontation called "Modernism and Anti-modernism" or "Tradition and Anti-tradition". The later poetry of Jeong Ji Yong was neither an appearance to overcome "imagism or modernism" published in his early poetry nor questions which were applied to only particular parts of his poetry. Therefore, the method of study has to sublate the method of study to lay emphasis on early poetry and medium poetry from a situation of modernism and to lay emphasis on later poetry from a situation of tradition and lyricism.
Through a modernism capable of grasping the perfect meaning only after it was approached by various methods of material, technique, mind and so on, we are able to make a general study of his poetries. And it is true that his affection and interest in tradition and original also appeared to cover the general fields of his poetries. Thus, this thesis has been of a different opinion from such views that his later poetry appeared in the process of overcoming a defect in his early poetry, or that his later poetry showed the world of the escape from reality subject to the limitation of personal view in his early poetry.
It is because they understood the range and meaning of early poetry and medium poetry each other differently that the controversialists who were of the same opinion in that the later poetry had been of formation of the space greatly distinguished from that of the former poetries, was of a different opinion from their appreciation of the world of the later poetry. The intention which have to work a new appreciation for his children verses and religious poetries which was indifferent all the while in order to perfectly understand the world of his general poetry through granting of an objective value to early poetries, medium ones and the later ones of Jeong Ji Yong is also a direction in the process of this study. As a result it turned down that a section of critical circles had insisted that his children poetries are but a practice poetry in one's childhood, furthermore it did not agree to such insistences that the religious poetry be the work without a serious consideration.
The thesis consists of Chapter Ⅱ·Ⅲ and Ⅳ as the main topic. The spatial change in the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong is based on the principle of collision and contact. As the three spaces established by the thesis are those to exclude one another as well as those related with one another closely, so that the three spaces in the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong were creative through such collisions, contacts and exclusions. Of course, the creation of the spaces is caused by caused such agonies in accordance to paradoxical living circumstance of Jeong Ji Yong, the poet who had to live a life of modern and premodern.
The chapter Ⅱ has discussed an early poetry of Jeong Ji Yong in [the space of original form and consciousness of one's home town]. The thesis has called this space "the space of original form" as the early poetry is the space which the experience of original form centers around. First of all, the most importance, was his experience in peace infancies and at his home town at this time. The chapter Ⅲ has discussed a medium-range poetry of Jeong Ji Yong in [the medium space and double attitudes]. The medium poetry is a time to give rise to complications due to the collision of his experience of original form and the diagrammatic experiences. The chapter Ⅳ has discussed an poetry begun with the space of a mountain in [the space of proposal and union of natures]. "A proposal" has a meaning of ceremonies for the revival of original form
This space was a space to revive an original form experienced by Jeong Ji Yong early. As the above examination the poetic world of Jeong Ji Yong consists of the spatial structures of each three characters through early poetries, medium ones and the later ones. The three spaces have an interactive principle of collision and contact with another one. The spatial change in the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong to get joined on space of original form, that of modern, that of ceremony resulted from an intelligible cognition to collision and contact between space of modern and that of premodern. Therefore, we must not pass the progress of his poetries over lightly as process of retrogression and escape.
Meanwhile the poetry of Jeong Ji Yong have had a lot of discussion on them as only a little intentional category called modernism poetry, religious poetry and natural poetry. The poetry of Jeong Ji Yong is significant in that subject of modern poetry and category of space was widely enlarged showing a change in the poetic world in sequence of Children's poetries-Rural poetries-Sea poetries-Urban poetries-Religious poetries-Natural poetries and so on. At the time of 1930s Jeong Ji Yong performed his part as a pioneer in the Korean modern poetry by experience of the various spaces that a lot of modern poets of Korea went ahead of the times when it was not long after a modern poetry of Korea had been quickened.
