국문 초록


‘아리랑’을 소재로 한 20세기 성악작품 연구

본 논문은 한국의 대표적인 전통 민요인 아리랑을 소재로 한 20세기 성악 작품들을 수집, 분류하고, 각 악곡들의 형식과 특징, 가사와 음악과의 연관성에 대해 고찰한 논문이다.
민요 아리랑은 우리 민족의 정서를 대표하는 민요로, 국내는 물론이고 해외에서도 유네스코 인류무형유산에 등재되면서 영향력 있는 음악으로 자리 잡았다. 이러한 아리랑은 서양음악 작곡가들에게도 중요한 창작의 소재로 사용되어 왔음에도 불구하고, 민요 아리랑을 주제로 한 성악작품에 대한 연구는 그리 활발하지 못한 실정이다. 이에 본 논문에서는, 20세기 이후 등장한 민요 아리랑을 주제로 한 성악 작품 73곡을 수집하고, 작품에 사용된 아리랑의 종류에 따라 분류하여 각 악곡의 주요 형식과 구조, 음악적 특징, 그리고 가사와 음악과의 연관성 등을 분석하여 정리하였다.
그 결과, 이러한 연구를 통해 다음과 같은 결론을 이끌어낼 수 있었다. 첫째, 아리랑을 소재로 한 성악 작품을 사용된 민요의 종류에 따라 분류했을 때, 본조 아리랑을 차용한 곡이 54곡으로 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 창작 시기별로 구분했을 때, 2000년 이후 창작된 작품이 56 퍼센트 이상을 차지했음을 알 수 있었으며 특히 유네스코 인류무형유산에 등재된 이후에만 31곡이 작곡되어 최근 들어 아리랑에 대한 관심이 더욱 높아지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 악기의 편성 면에서는 피아노 반주가 붙은 곡이 64곡으로 가장 많았으며, 국악기를 동반한 편성도 9곡 가량 나타났다. 넷째, 가사와 음악과의 연관성에서 살펴보면, 주요 가사와 주제를 표현하기 위해 가사 그리기 기법을 주로 사용했는데, 이러한 가사의 표현은 민요 사설을 차용할 때보다 작곡가가 새로 쓴 창작 가사에서 더욱 두드러지게 나타남을 알 수 있었다.

Abstract

Vocal Music Composed in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries Based on Arirang

This study focuses on the vocal works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, which were composed based on arirang. The works are categorized by the type of arirang songs used in the compositions and analyzed in terms of their forms, distinct characteristics, and the relationships between the lyrics and the music.
Arirang is a genre of Korean folk music in which the quintessential Korean sentiment is expressed. It is inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and known worldwide as an important genre representing Korean culture and traditional music. Arirang has given inspirations to numerous Western music composers and has been used as an important material for a large number of musical works. However, there has been very few scholarly researches on the vocal works based on arirang songs. In this study, seventy-four vocal music, composed since the twentieth century based on arirang songs, are categorized according to the type of arirang song used in each work, the date of composition, and instrumentation, and analyzed with regard to the form and structure, distinct characteristics, and the relationship between lyrics and music of each work.
Through this categorization and analysis, it was found that when the seventy-four vocal works are categorized by the type of arirang song used in each composition, the largest group consists of fifty-four works which borrowed its elements from Bonjo Arirang. When the works are categorized by the date of composition, the works composed in the twenty-first century form the largest group, which amounts to seventy percent of the works listed in this study. Thirty-one out of seventy-four works were composed after the point arirang was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This indicates that there has been a growing interest in arirang in recent years. In terms of instrumentation, sixty-four songs were written for a solo voice with piano accompaniment and nine works included Korean traditional instruments. Finally, through analyzing the relationship between the lyrics and the music, it was found that word-painting is often used to express the keywords and the main theme of the lyrics. The use of word-painting technique was more obvious in the works that use newly written lyrics rather than borrowing the lyrics of the original arirang song.
