      Emotional intelligence(EI) has become a fashionable topic in the popular press. Now that we have some sense of what EI is, and we need to establish some scientific bases for what constitutes a good measure of El for young children. The present study was conducted in order to make an inquiry, based on the review of preceding related literature on the key constructs of El may be recognized and studied in children, how El for young children is assessed. Various kinds of El tests can be grouped according to definition of El : Mental ability approach and mixed list approach, and they sorted according to three groups : performance, self-report, and observer-rating measures. By reviewing the preceding research, suggestions for a new test are summarized. First, a new EI test for young children can be measured reliably by definition of EI as mental ability, namely, intelligence. Second, if the new test is made based on the four branch model, developed items will include isolation and correlation, among the four branch model. Third, Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso(2000), suggested that the four branches are arranged in a logical sequence, however they appeared in parallel rather than a serial developmental relationship among four branches. So, the El test should explain El developmental levels and characteristics of children. Fourth, if El, as a mental ability, correlates with intelligence, outcomes of the new test should exhibit disparity of age and age norm. Fifth, the test should be a performance test rather than a self report test, because self-report measures do not reflect actual performance and do not correlate with general intelligence. Sixth, the new test should explain and predict differences of behavior and thinking process among individual children.
