According to Chinese ancient philosophy, the relation between Heaven and man correlates with Yin-yang and Five Elements as strongly as the relationship between ins and outs or between courtesy and rules. This paper looks into the combination process of Yin-yang and Five Elements during the Warring States period and studies its root cause in terms of the relation between Heaven and man mentioned in Hundred Schools of Thought. Confucianism and Mohism are schools which reflect ideology of both intellectuals and the lower class, and Lu's Spring and Autumn is an encyclopedic compendium of the ideas of the Hundred Schools of Thought compiled at the end of the Warring Stated period. The arguments of these schools confirm that Yin-yang and Five Elements which had not been originally related with each other were united in the course of reestablishment of the relation between Heaven and man. In terms of the relationship, Confucianism emphasized man than heaven, but Xunzi separated and united the two elements. The Mohism tried to justify their party politically and morally through embracement and conversion of the original notion of Heaven. Consequently, Confucianism and Mohism flourished as the great schools of the time, but the prosperity prevented the attention to Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements. Confucianism just designated the notion of Five Elements as humanity, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and truthfulness which fall into the ethical category, and Mohism accepted the flourishing theory of Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements to just apply it to people’s daily lives and military science. After the middle of the Warring States period, the theory was paid attention to by the Yin-yang school, and it was developed into the organized theory which deals with humans and their society by Lüshi Chunqiu. That’s because Jin led the unification of China after the middle of the Warring States period and the unification of ideology was necessary. This required the efforts to understand not only the unity of Heaven and man but also Three Powers “Heaven,” “Earth,” and “Man,” or the efforts to see people’s lives and the logic of all creation as one. For the reason, it is proper to say that the combination of Yin-yang and Five Elements is the unity of Heaven and man.
The Chapter I of this paper looks into the formation and characteristic of the Yin-yang school. The Yin-yang school is the abbreviation of the school of Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements, and it was established during the Han era. Historical Records regards Zou Yan as an important philosopher of the Yin-yang school, but his ideology was related to Confucianism. This shows that one specific school did not monopolize Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements.
The Chapter Ⅱ studies the relation of Heaven and man and the theory of Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements with the Confucian approach. The Hundred Schools Thought, including Confucianism, was still under the influence of notion of Heaven established in the Eun and Ju eras. However, reestablishment of the notion was required in order to justify common and practical norms and values.
The Chapter Ⅲ looks into the relation of Heaven and man and the theory of Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements formed by Mohism, which rose and fell during the Warring States period, and compares them with Hundred Schools of Thought. Mohism accepted the notion of Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements which was popular at that time and was active in applying it to military science with a comprehensive and reasonable approach. Its root cause is in the difference of perception of reality and historical view from Hundred Schools Thought. According to Mohism, this is well reflected in the course of the development process of relation between Heaven and man.
The Chapter Ⅳ studies the relation of Heaven and man and the theory of Taoistic Yin-yang and Five Elements mentioned in Lu's Spring and Autumn, with the focus on the age of the moon, punishment and virtue, and the theory of disaster and accident. This paper compiles the ideas of Hundred Schools of Thought and systemizes the formation of trinity of “Heaven,” “Earth,” and “Man,” using the category of Yin-yang and Five Elements from the ancient. This may be considered a blueprint for the unified empire which connects creations of the sky and earth, or time and space, closely to each other with humans as the center.
