산책자 구보의 욕망 분석, 경멸과 선망의 이중주 = An Analysis of Stroller Gubo``s Desires: A Duet of Contempt and Envy

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This novel consists of reflections and scenes observed by Gubo during his stroll in Seoul from noon to 2 o`` clock in the morning. The pasts reminded by several places where he visited penetrate his present time with techniques of stream of consciousness. The novelist Gubo longs for a happiness through his promenade. To do so, he has to find out what kind of happiness that he wants. He says that he doesn`t know what he really wants. As he walked around Seoul, he met many people, friends and girls. He visited several places like cafe, department store , bank and Seoul station. etc. In the streetcar, he met a lady with parasol who reminded him of ex-girl friend in Tokyo. Gubo loved her really but he did`nt have enough courage to merry her. Because she was once fiancee of his schoolmate. He decided to forget her and oppressed all memories about her. Nevertheless, the suppressed memories sprung out unexpectedly and disguisedly. Gubo disguised his desire for woman and money, in addition to it, he disdained this kind of snobby and bourgeois desire. He seemed to much value on writing novels to disguise his snobby desire. These two dichotomous desires, ``desire of love`` and ``desire of art`` are not harmonious in his mind.. He was not able to keep the balance between love and art, so he suffered from many diseases like amblyopia, headaches, tympanitis. Ending his stroll, he accepted the desire of love as his, he decided to merry with some woman by following his mother`s advice. Finally, he will overcome these competitive two desires and sublimate sexual impulse in art. Gubo tries to be a father both for his future children and for his novels based on immortal desire. Now two competitive desires are in harmony with immortal desire, Gubo is able to rewrite novels interrupted for three years.
