This paper examines Choe Jeong-hui’s novel The River Flows Far Away as a distinctive autobiographical narrative centered on the figure of the “battered wife.” It analyzes how autobiographical elements are reworked − through exaggeration, reduction, distortion, and transformation − to reconfigure the personal and historical meanings attributed to a male figure driven by madness and aggression. Jo Seung-hyeon, who murders his child out of spousal hatred and revenge, embodies a grotesque cruelty rarely encountered in Korean fiction. Rather than a subject who merely rationalizes the oppression of others, he emerges as a form of violent subjectivity that compulsively enacts domination, thereby pushing the analytical category of “colonial masculinity” to its limits. In contrast, Oh Han-yeong, depicted as an “affectionate and pure” ideal, signifies both the protagonist Seo Gang-ju’s inner resilience and the core of the author’s enduring artistic identity. By foregrounding how Seo, an intellectual woman, repeatedly becomes entangled in a “squalid” male- dominated world despite her resistance, the novel renders legible the affective economy of pain and frustration experienced by an “entangled survivor” in the post-liberation period. Through this analysis, the article reframes Choe Jeong-hui as a writer who captures masculine madness and argues for a shift in critical focus - from asking whether her work is feminist to examining the specific mode of feminism it articulates.
