칸트의 『실천이성비판』에서 최고선 구상의 사회정의론적 통찰과 그 한계

국문 초록 (Abstract)

칸트가 최고선을 정의하기 위해 활용하는 최상선과 완전선은 공히 덕과 행복을 인과적 관계로 잇는 개념들이다. 전자는 ‘덕을 갖추었다면, 반드시 행복할 자격이 있다’고 말하는 개념이라면, 후자는 더 나아가 ‘덕스러운 자의 행복할 자격이 세계 안에서 정말로 실현될 수 있어야 한다’고 말하는 개념이다. 이를 통해 칸트의 최고선은 궁극적으로 ‘최상선의 실현으로서의 완전선’으로 정의된다. 이렇게 정의된 최고선 개념 안에는 덕스러운 자들이 곤궁하고 비참한 사회는 ‘불의’한 세계이며, ‘행복할 자격’이 있는 자들에게 정말로 ‘행복한 삶의 현존’을 보장해주는 사회가 정의로운 세계라는 것, 그리고 이런 정의로운 사회를 실현하는 것이 윤리적 존재로서의 우리의 책무라는 수수하지만 강력한 통찰이 담겨 있는 것으로 보인다. 그러나 칸트는 이런 통찰을 본격적으로 전개하는 쪽으로 나아가지 않고, 최고선의 가능성을 보증하기 위해 영혼의 불멸과 신의 현존을 요청하는데 그친다. 이런 도덕-신학적 해법은 지극히 불충분하다. 칸트의 말대로 덕과 행복이 이질적 성분들이며 이 양자의 인과적 종합을 요하는 ‘실천적’ 이념이 최고선이라면, 이 이념은 이 세계 안의 유한한 존재인 우리의 삶을 규정하는 물질적, 경험적 조건들을 고려하고 개선할 때에만 실현 가능할 것이기 때문이다. 그러나 칸트의 ‘순수’ 이성의 실천 철학이 포괄하기를 거부하는 것이 바로 이 조건들이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The supreme good and the complete good, with which Kant defines the highest good, are both concepts that link virtue and happiness in a causal relation. If the former says that virtue is the supreme condition for having the worthiness to be happy, the latter requires that such worthiness of the virtuous person to be happy must really be realized in the world. In this way Kant defines the highest good as the complete good which ultimately means the realization of the supreme good. Accordingly, a society in which virtuous persons live poor and miserable life should be called ‘unjust’, while only the society that guarantees really happy life to those entitled to happiness must be categorized as the ‘just’ world. Therefore, Kant’s concept of the highest good seems to contain a modest but strong insight, insofar as it demands of us responsibility as ethical beings to realize a just society. However, Kant does not develop such productive insights further, but only introduces the transcendental postulates such as the immortality of the soul and the existence of God in order to guarantee the possibility of the highest good. But this moral-theological solution is extremely inadequate. For if virtue and happiness are two heterogeneous components, as Kant himself said, and if the highest good refers the causal synthesis of these two components, the possibility and the realization of the highest good requires the consideration and improvement of the material and empirical conditions that determine our finite lives in this world. However, it is precisely these conditions that Kant’s practical philosophy of “pure” practical reason cannot embrace.
