This paper aims to elucidate the characteristics of Korean classical poetry (gosi-ga) from the perspective of East Asian poetics and poetic history. It raises the necessity for research into East Asian poetics and poetic history, which has been relatively neglected due to nationalism and aestheticism. Focusing on the poetics of the Classic of Poetry (Shijing), the study traces the essence, function, and evolutionary process of poetry and song. It highlights the Shijing's role as gasi (歌詩), a fusion of poetry and song that functioned as a means of moral cultivation (punhwa, 風化) in dynastic states. The paper examines various poetic genres—such as gosi, akbu, hyangga, modern-style poetry, and gasa—that emerged to replace the Shijing's functions in response to changing times, analyzing them within the broader context of East Asian poetic history. Specifically, it reveals that the general characteristics found in Korean classical poetry, including gosi, hyangga, akjang, sijo, and gasa, were formed as alternative gasi within the universal currents of East Asian poetic history. Ultimately, the paper re-examines the efforts of dynastic states to internalize a common morality and sensibility—the foundation of common sense—through poetry and song.
