This study quantitatively examines the distribution of 2,756 distinct types of the first phrase of the last line in 46,204 classical sijo poems whose final lines are textually identifiable in The Comprehensive Anthology of Classical Sijo (2012). The analysis cross-compares distributional patterns along two axes: genre (pyeong-sijo vs. saseol-sijo) and historical period (15th–19th centuries).
In the genre-based comparison, pyeong-sijo exhibits a relatively gradual dispersion of high-frequency expressions across the upper ranks, whereas saseol-sijo demonstrates a stronger concentration on a limited number of top-ranked phrases, with genre-specific items emerging rapidly beyond the mid-frequency range. Notably, the number of phrases required to reach a cumulative 50% frequency differs markedly—44 in pyeong-sijo and 32 in saseol-sijo—indicating that while introductory conventions of the final line are broadly shared in pyeong-sijo, they converge into a more concentrated conventional core in saseol-sijo. Focusing on the phrase “amado”, the study further analyzes disparities in author-level usage rates and patterns of sequential repetition as discursive strategy. Variants such as “geuraedo,” “dueora,” and “amado” found in the transmission of saseol-sijo suggest that performative and transmission contexts actively contributed to the reconfiguration of final-line conventions.
A diachronic examination of attributed authors from the 15th to the 19th century reveals three distributional tendencies: long-duration persistence (e.g., “amado,” “dueora”); cyclical rhythmic forms (e.g., “urido/urineun,” “eojjita”); and short-term event-binding expressions (e.g., “mijaera,” “gwangpungi”). Although fifteenth-century materials entail philological constraints, including issues of authorship attribution and later textual modifications, the large-scale dataset nonetheless enables the first phrase of the last line to be operationalized as a unit of genre grammar. By visualizing its distributional patterns, this study provides an empirical foundation for understanding how classical sijo sustained itself historically through the continual recalibration of poetic convention.
