This study develops the Avatar-Self Cross Annotation Writing model (ASCW) and verifies its educational effectiveness by reinterpreting annotation as a core writing strategy. ASCW facilitates learners’ cross annotation between texts representing their ideal self and actual self, transforming self-discrepancies into reflective resources. While annotation has traditionally been considered supplementary, ASCW elevates it to a constitutive writing strategy facilitating cognitive structures and reflective processes.
An empirical study with 120 writing course students at W University used ‘Ready Player One’ to compare experimental and control groups. Results showed ASCW significantly reduced self-discrepancy, enhanced critical reflection, and concretized action plans, with effects persisting after six weeks. A three-stage mediating pathway was confirmed: self-discrepancy reduction → reflection deepening → action plan concretization.
The findings demonstrate ASCW functions as a systematic educational intervention model amenable to quantitative validation. By reconceptualizing annotation as cross annotation, this study presents a new writing education paradigm addressing traditional reflective writing limitations.
