Communication disorders are the most common developmental disorders in young children. It is very important to find communication difficulties that young children show because early screening and intervention can help the normal development or prevent them from progressing to more severe disabilities. The screening can be done by parents or preschool teachers who spend a lot of time with children. Especially, preschool teachers play a critical role in this case because they can find the communication difficulties from an objective point of view in various situations.
Therefore, this study developed an educational program called Early Screening for Communication Disorders(ESC). The ESC education program covers three different communication disorders; a language disorder, an articulation and phonological disorder, and a fluency disorder, and one neurodevelopment disorder called autism spectrum disorder, which usually shows social communication and interaction defects. The ESC education program was conducted for preschool teachers to provide a better understanding of the communication disorders and to help the screening process of it. Also, this study examined the changes in preschool teachers' perceptions of communication disorders after the ESC education program to present supporting data for screening of communication disorders.
A total of 58 preschool teachers working at national and public daycare centers in Busan participated in this study. The ESC education program was conducted for a total of 14 hours over 4 weeks, and each participant filled out questionnaires before and after the program. The questionnaires can be divided into three parts; general information of each participant, understandings and perceptions of communication disorders, and participant satisfaction with the ESC education program. The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First, the preschool teachers, who have taken classes or seminars related to communication disorders before the ESC education program, have statistically better understandings and perceptions of communication disorders than those who have not. However, there was no significant difference between preschool teachers who have experienced children with communication disorders and those who have not.
Second, there was a significant difference in preschool teachers' understandings and perceptions of communication disorders before and after the ESC education program. After the program, their overall understandings and perceptions of communication disorders were statistically higher than before. When examining the changes by each disorder in the ESC education program, they were significantly higher in all four areas of disorders after the ESC education program.
Third, all questions related to the satisfaction of preschool teachers with the ESC education program were rated 4.50 or higher on a 5-point scale, and the overall satisfaction with the ESC education program was 4.72.
This study confirmed that the majority of preschool teachers experienced children with communication disorders, while educational opportunities and contents related to communication disorders for them were limited. It also confirmed that such educational programs could positively help preschool teachers understand and recognize communication disorders by conducting the ESC education program for them. These results suggest that more educational programs related to communication disorders should be available for preschool teachers. This study also provides supporting data to help the screening process of communication disorders in young children by conducting the ESC education program for preschool teachers to examine the changes in their understandings and perceptions of communication disorders.
