Identity and Aspects of Conflict among Women Affected by Eating Disorders: Focusing on Mythical Motifs and Pictorial Images = 신화적 모티브와 회화적 이미지를 통해 살펴본 섭식장애 여성들의 정체성 갈등에 대한 의미연구

This study was conducted to explore the origins of psychological difficulties experienced by women affected by eating disorders. To achieve this, the archetype of such women was found in the Goddess Persephone and this was looked into regarding the psychological conflict revealed in the artwork created by a case study, Silvia, who has an eating disorder. The interdependent mother-daughter relationship between the Goddesses Demeter and Persephone represents the archetypal relationship between a mother and daughter unable to cut the umbilical cord. For Silvia, her conflict over her mother that was unexpressed via words was revealed through her artwork. The psychological conflicts of women with eating disorders to attain independence, autonomy, and control as adults manifest as unconscious behaviors in which the rejection of food is a symbol for the rejection of the mother. In addition, if these women are in an advanced stage of morbidity, they stay passive by refusing to reveal socially their identity as woman. Although this state draws protection externally, they seem to deal with deep depression internally.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 섭식장애 여성들이 겪고 있는 심리적 어려움의 근원을 탐구하기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위해 분석심리학에 기초하여 섭식장애 여성들의 원형을 페르세포네 여신에서 찾아 고찰하였고 섭식장애 여성이 수행한 미술작업에서 드러난 심리적 갈등을 사례로 살펴보았다. 페르세포네와 데미테르 여신들의 상호 의존적인 모녀 관계는 탯줄을 끊지 못한 모녀의 원형을 보여준다. Silvia의 사례에서도 미술작업을 통해 언어화 되지 못한 어머니에 대한 갈등, 즉 독립을 위한 심리적 투쟁이 표면화 되었다. 섭식장애 여성들의 성인으로서 독립성, 자율성, 통제력을 획득하기 위한 심리적 갈등은 어머니를 거부하는 상징적 의미로서 음식을 거부하는 무의식적 행동 양상으로 나타나며 깊은 병적인 상태에서는 여성으로서의 정체성을 사회적으로 드러내지 않는 수동적 상태에 머무른다. 이 상태에서는 외부적으로 보호를 이끌어내지만 내부적으로는 깊은 우울을 감당한다고 보았다. 본 연구결과를 토대로 후속연구에 대한 제언과 시사점을 논의하였다.
