한국어와 영어간 발화행위 표현방식의 차이 = Differences between Korean and English in Expressions for Speech Act

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

To describe an event or activity invisible at the moment of the speech is one of the most essential functions of human language. Among diverse events or activities described through language, the speech act between two or more people, the most characteristic human activity, is a very significant subject to report in our speech or writing. English has a particularly diverse stock file of verbs referring to speech act. The diversity is closely connected with categorization of utterance into particular kinds of speech acts. In addition to literal verbs with their original meaning as designating some particular aspects of speech acts, English has developed similarly diverse metaphorical expressions to highlight or enhance the dramatic effect of some specific features of speech acts. This is in sharp contrast with the Korean way of expressing speech act provided with intricate system of clausal endings. This study is an analysis of differences between Korean and English in their syntactic structures and functions of speech act forms. It also analyzes representative metaphorical expressions referring to speech in English in comparison with Korean versions, thus identifying the linguistic and cultural characteristics of English that have no Korean counterparts.
