낯선 유기체인 미생물을 표상하는 현대미술 = The Unfamiliar Organism of Microbe Transfigured in Contemporary Art

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 낯선 유기체인 미생물을 형상화한 2000년 이후의 조형예술 작품에서 표상된 것의 정체와 그 수단의 세부적인 특질들을 분석하고 표현내용의 핵심을 파악함으로써 미생물의 생명 친화적 가치가 어떻게 예술로 승화되고 있는지를 규명하는 것이다. 연구 내용과 방법은 특정 미생물이 미적 관조의 대상으로 재현된 유형과 미생물 군집의 생존 방식인 공생이 표현된 유형으로 크게 나누어, 미생물학과 예술의 관련 문헌을 참조하면서 낯선 유기체의 존재 의미뿐 아니라 상상과 실재의 상호작용을 통해 표상이 구현되는 방식을 고찰한다. 전자에는 박테리아와 규조류의 기하학적 생체구조를 형상화한 브라운, 곰팡이의 양가적 의미나 시간성에 주목한 라이언과 프레이젠의 작품이, 후자에는 공생의 균형이나 불균형한 상태를 현시한 레이스, 에슬링어, 랭톤의 작품이 속한다. 7점의 작품 분석을 통해 도출한 결과의 핵심은 확대와 과장에 의한 변형, 낯섦의 감각적 전유, 유기체의 개별성이라는 개념의 전복이다. 미생물은 태초부터 지금까지 생태계의 근원이자 중심 동력으로서 우리가 살아가는 세계의 환경을 조성해온 생명이다. 지구상의 생명체는 개체화의 양상에서만 차이가 있을 뿐 모두가 박테리아의 군체라는 점에서 하나인 것이다. 미시 세계는 분자적 수준으로까지 확장하여 모든 존재자를 하나로 묶는 거대한 생명의 평면, 즉 존재론적 일반성이 마련되는 장소이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the life-friendly value of microorganisms is artistically sublimated in contemporary art since 2000 that transfigures microbe as unfamiliar organisms by analyzing the identity of the represented images and the detailed characteristics of their means and grasping the core of their contents. Based upon related references in microbiology and art, the research contents and methods are largely divided into the type represented a specific microbe as an object of aesthetic contemplation and the type expressed symbiosis as the survival method of the microbial community in order to understand the meaning of unfamiliar organisms as well as their representational means through the interaction of imagination and reality. The former case is consist of Brown’s two artworks representing the giometric structures of bacteria and diatoms, Ryan and Freisen’s works projecting on the ambivalence or timely manner of mold while the latter includes Reis, Esslinger and Langton s works presenting the balance or imbalance of symbiosis. The results derived from the 7 case studies are the transfiguration by enlargement and exaggeration, the sensory appropriation of the unfamiliar and the overthrow of the concept of individual organism. Microbes are life that have created the environment of the world in which we live as the source and central driving force of the ecosystem since the beginning of time. Life on Earth differs only in the aspect of individuation, but all are one in that they are colonies of bacteria. The microscopic world is a huge plane of life extending to the molecular level and uniting all beings. The ontological generality is emerged from there.
