      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The verb phrase consists of three elements in this order: the main verb, the complement, and an optional element adverbial. The main verb and the complement are closely interrelated. The traditional terminology like "transitive" and "intransitive" is used to explain this relation. In our terminology, a transitive verb is a main verb that takes a noun phrase complement. Am intransitive verb, on the other hand, does not take an object noun phrase.
In this grammar, we make the generalization that all main verbs must be followed by a complement is obviously a noun phrase. In the case of intransitive verb, the complement is the null set ø. The complement, then, is a list of the elements that main verbs take.
In English, a verb and a preposition can be fused to form a new unit of verb called "two-word verb". When a two-word verb is transitive, that is, when it takes a noun phrase complement, we must make a further distinction between separable and inseparable two-word verb.
