In this research, a historical study was performed targeting the winning pieces of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award which the Journalists Association of Korea established in September 1990 and still awards today in order to promote journalist morale in each press organization and awaken the importance of exclusives. First, the main current situation of the U.S. and Korean press was analyzed through literary researches while the position held by the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award was studied. Additionally, the journalistic situation was examined by dividing the time from 1990 to the present into 3 periods according to changes to the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award. Next, a historical flow was understood through analysis on the winning pieces of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award while the present status, problems, and improvement methods for the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award were deduced through interviews of experts.
The results are as follows. First, winning pieces for the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award presented a tendency of overall increase. This is judged as the increase of quality articles following the fluid changes to the number of award winning pieces and the number of Special and Investigative Reporting increasing while awards increased as competition grew from employment anxieties following the bulging of the IMF. When dividing this period according to the increasing and decreasing trend of the awards, it can be categorized into 3 periods: the first period is the quickening period, from 1990 to 1992, when the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award was established and located within journalism. The second period is from 1993 to 2002 when the number of winning pieces increased with the constant development of the award’s quality and quantity. The third period is from 2003 to 2008, a time of suffering and rebounding from conflicts out of quarrels among winners as well as problems about the screening process.
Second, the result of analysis that followed categorizing the winning pieces of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award by press types-newspaper, broadcasting, telecommunication, and magazines-showed that the award was presented the most to the newspaper division followed in order by broadcasting, telecommunication, and magazine. Moreover, an overall increasing tendency of winning pieces appeared in the three divisions beside the magazine division.
Third, the result of analysis based on categorizing the winning pieces of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award by themes-politics, economics, society, culture, and international-showed that the award was awarded the most in the society division followed in order by politics, culture, international, and economics. The remarkable point is that, even though award winning pieces were rare in culture, international, and economics divisions during the early establishment times; winners are currently increasing even in culture, international, economics divisions as societal atmospheres change and the level of receivers improve. The phenomenon of winning pieces being selected from such diverse areas is seen as a desirable one in the face of enhancing societal levels.
Fourth, the result of analysis that followed categorizing the winning pieces of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award by article types-news, exclusive, and professional reports-showed that the award was awarded the most in the news report division followed in order by exclusive reporting, professional reporting, and special merit awards while an overall increasing tendency appeared in all three areas. The remarkable point here is that the amount of exclusive reports increased noticeably compared to the amount of news and professional reports. This is analyzed as being the case that while articles simply centering on prompt reports were awarded with the ‘Journalist of the Month’ in the past, exclusive reports requiring time and effort are recently being generously given points.
Fifth, view points on the value, structures of conflict among press companies, and finances of Internet areas of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award were examined through expert interviews. First, most research participants acknowledged the value of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award. Next, regarding the conflict structure among press companies, they pointed out that even though the Journalists Association of Korea gives out awards by dividing central and regional areas, central media has been in reality mostly awarded. Lastly, regarding the finance of Internet areas on the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award, both positive and negative opinions appeared simultaneously.
Some suggestions are given based on such research results. First, the Journalists Association of Korea should accurately push for emphasis on equality in order to be unbiased toward any one side in the screening process. This is to resolve the structure of conflict between central and local presses as well as between Jo·Jung·Dong(Korea’s 3 main newspaper companies) and other newspaper companies. Next, our current situation demands that the role of the Internet press not be ignored. Accordingly, a plan of separately establishing and operating the Internet division in exhibition areas of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award is suggested. Lastly, the winning piece of the ‘Journalist of the Month’ award is judged as a good article bearing exclusive value. In the situation where articles with depth and concentration functioning as important factors are awarded frequently, constant efforts to deal with diverse features of society in depth and correct the distorted truths with a sharp understanding of the problems will be required from journalists.
