Domestic residential child-care institutions had been hurriedly established in a shorter period of time to protect/care orphaned children with such national crises as Korea's liberation from Japan and the Korean War. As the number of children who were admitted to child-care institutions increased, society and academic circles paid much attention to them and carried out many studies on them. However, most of studies were carried out quantitatively and study subjects were limited in children and life counselors in the institutions, thus excluding relatives who were most closely connected to institutionalized children. This tendency of studies seemed to be caused by two reasons: (1) it was difficult to find out relatives and make them take part in studies; and (2) domestic institutionalized care services had the characteristic of taking children and relatives separately after children were institutionalized once.
This study aimed to understand the experience of relatives who had sent children to residential child-care institutions and then met them on a regular basis, and examine their psychologic aspects of life. In this regard, this study seems to be a rare attempt. For this, this study carried out individual in-depth interviews with 5 study subjects and collected data were intensively examined using Giorgi's research method, thus analyzing and describing relative's experience of meeting with institutionalized children on a regular basis.
Via data analysis, this study worked out 6 categories, 22 sub-categories and 46 meaning units. The 6 categories consisted of such substantial subject materials as 'institutionalized children who have parents,' 'relative's anxiety and confusion after children were institutionalized,' 'development from inevitable meeting to regular meeting,' 'intermittently visiting relative's inevitable burden of child rearing,' 'child rearing conflicts between intermittently visiting relatives and institutional ongoing parents,' and 'the blossom of hope even with intermittent visitation.'
Relatives had to send children to residential child-care institutions with socioeconomic crisis of family and children's maladaptation, and they continued to experience psychologic pains after sending children to residential child-care institutions. As relatives met institutionalized children on a regular basis, they had to face the burden of child rearing. Relatives underwent child rearing conflicts with institutional employees, but they visited their institutionalized children more regularly with institutional employee's encouragement and their participations in family programs in the institutions. In conclusion, relative's regular meeting with their institutionalized children could be summarized as 'their painstaking endeavor of maintaining a familial tie with children even in a difficult situation in which they inevitably chose to live apart from their children for some unavoidable reasons.' For them, the reuniting of families in the future was no longer an empty dream. Based on study findings, it is possible to grope after suggestions for policies and practical measures to increase the opportunities of meeting between relatives and their institutionalized children.
