사회학을 찬미하다 = 프랑스 국립과학연구원의 금메달 수상 연설

국문 초록 (Abstract)

CNRS에서 수여한 금메달을 받으며 개인적 기쁨을 누리기에 앞서, 저는 사회학에 대해 제기되는 몇 가지의 근본 문제들에 대해 성찰하고 싶습니다. 첫째, 사회학은 자신에게 고유한 방법, 개념, 모델들을 갖고 있는 견고한 경험 과학입니다. 사회학의 과학성이 종종 문제시되는 이유는, 사회학이, 상식에 기초하고 있고, 저널리즘적 정보와 가까운 비과학적 담론체계이기 때문이 아니라, 자신의 과학성을 객관화시켜 성찰하는 급진적 자기-성찰을 추구하기 때문입니다. 둘째, 이런 사회학의 성찰성은 과학장에 대한 사회학적 분석의 형태로 다른 학문들에 대해 적용됩니다. 사회학은 과학적 인식을 절대시하는 대신, 과학장의 구조적 구성과 작동을 분석함으로써, 과학적 지식의 사회적 무의식을 비판적으로 드러냅니다. 셋째, 시장의 권력이 점점 더 강화되고, 국가가 과학을 시민을 조작하는 도구로 삼을 수 있는 기회가 더 많아지는 이 시점에, 사회학은 비판적 대항-권력으로 기능할 수 있으며 또한 기능해야 합니다. 이런 점에서 사회학은 공적 서비스로서 스스로를 규정합니다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Before I delight in the pleasure of receiving the gold medal accorded by CNRS, I would like to reflect upon the few basic characteristics of sociology. First of all, sociology is solid empirical science outfitted with its own methods, concepts, and models. The reason for which the scientific characteristics of sociology are often put into question is not because sociology represents a non-scientific discursive system based upon common sense which is similar to journalistic information, but it is because sociology seeks self-reflection through the objective investigation of its own status as science. Secondly, this reflexivity is often applied to other sciences in the form of sociological analysis of scientific fields. Instead of considering scientific knowledge to be absolute, sociology strives to reveal, in a critical manner, the social unconsciousness of scientific knowledge by analyzing the structural constitution and operations of scientific fields. Finally, as the power of the market becomes stronger, and as the state has more opportunities to use sciences to manipulate citizens, sociology can and should function as a critical vehicle that counters such abuse of power. In this sense, sociology is defined as a public service and as a critical counter-power.
