황석영의『바리데기』에 나타난 민족 문제

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글에서는 황석영의 『바리데기』에서 민족 문제가 다루어지는 방식에 주목하였다. 여기에서는 ‘바리’라는 이름의 소녀가 겪은 ‘탈북’과 ‘이주’의 이야기에서, 분단 체제 하의 민족 문제가 어떤 방식으로 기억되었고 그것을 어떻게 극복하고자 하였는지에 초점을 맞추어 소설을 평가하였다. 『바리데기』는 극심한 식량난을 겪은 북한의 모습을 생생하게 담아냈다는 점에서 의미 있는 소설이다. 하지만 ‘바리’가 제1세계로 이주한 후에는 북한의 부정적 현실은 잊혀진 채 ‘바리’의 조국은 ‘순수한 원형적 이미지’로 환기되는 것을 볼 수 있다. 이렇게 하여 민족은 추상화된 이미지로 기억되고, 민족의 문제는 다른 제3세계 이주민들의 경험과 동질화 되고 만다. 따라서 『바리데기』에서는 만신 ‘바리’의 치유 능력은 발휘되지 못하였고, 제3세계 하층민들의 고통은 추상적 경구를 나열함으로써 수사적 차원에서만 해결될 뿐이라는 점을 확인할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis focused on how Baridegi, a novel written by Hwang Seok-young, was dealing with the Korean national problem. It looked into how a girl with the name of Bari overcame and remembered the problem under the national division when she escaped from North Korea into the other countries. This novel is successful in that it vividly described North Korea which was suffering from severe poverty. However, after Bari emigrated to the western developed country, her negative perception on North Korea faded out and paved the way to the innocent and archetypal image. As such, Bari ended up with remembering the North Korea in an abstract way, and her previous experience in her country got treated as the same experiences that any defectors from the third world could have. It in turn held Bari as a psychic healer back not to exert her healing ability and the empty rhetoric is that the pain of the lower classes could be relieved.
