남매간 성폭력 피해자의 경험에 대한 질적 탐색연구 = An Exploratory Study of Sibling Sexual Abuse Dynamics

Research on sibling sexual abuse in Korea is scarce, and thus little is known about the extent of sibling sexual abuse there. Research on sibling sexual abuse in other countries has reported high rates of both its occurrence and its having been underreported. Victims of sibling sexual abuse are known to experience a variety of short- and long-term negative effects after the abuse. This study aimed to explore the experiences of victims of sibling sexual abuse in Korea, which is an area that has thus far been given no attention in child sexual abuse research in that country. The study focused on the family dynamics, disclosure process, and extra-familial support system, as well as the effects of the victimization on survivor’s later life. Lack of parental monitoring, family malfunctioning and familial risk factors such as maternal depression and family violence allowed such abuse to happen. Victims tended to be separated from the family, while the offenders stayed at home. Parents were likely to deny the abuse and take the offending children’s sides, which aggravated the symptoms of the abused children. Based on these results, implications for practice and policy were suggested.
