Nasal cytology has been known as a valuable technique for differential diagnosis of rhinitis. Nose-blowing or cotton-tipped scraping methods were usually used for obtaining nasal secretions or mucosa, these methods ran a high risk of cell distortion and degranulation and mainly permitted examination of nasal secretion. Of the tew methods, nasal scraping with a flexible plastic nasal probe permited examination af both nasal secretions and mucosas, posing less risk of cell distortion and degranula tion This study was designed to define more clearly the cytology of the nasal mucosa using a flexible plastic nasal probe for scraping mucosas. The results were as follows '. 1) The incidence of eosinophilia(20%) was higher in the skin test positive group than in the skin test negative group (p <0.01), there were no significant differences in the mast cells and goblet cells. 2) The incidence of eosinophilia(20%) and mast cell was higher in seasonal rhinitis than perennial rhinitis (p<0. 01, p<0. 05, respectively), there were no significant difference in goblet cells In conclusion, nasal cytology with mucosa scraping using a flexible nasal probe was a valuable technique for the differenti I diagnosis of rhinitis.
