실상산문의 인물과 사상 = The Characters and Ideas of Silsangsan School

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper reveals the characters and ideas of Silsangsan school, one of the Nine Mountain Seon schools in the late Silla and early Goryeo era. Hong-cheok studied abroad in Tang Dynasty to learn Seon and came back. After that, he founded Silsangsa Temple in Jirisan Mountain and re-established Silsangsan school and his dharma lineage was handed down to Su-cheol. Silsangsan school has a solid status as the first Seon School among the Nine Mountain Seon schools in the history of Korean Seon order.
In fact, the researches so far on the characters and ideas of Silsangsan school can be summarized as follows.
First, Silsangsan school founder, Hong-cheok succeeded to Seodang -Jijang, a disciple of Seon master Majo-Doil. Second, the characteristic of Hong-cheok’s Seon thought is “to cultivate but nothing to cultivate, to enlighten but nothing to enlighten.” Third, Hong-cheok’s Seon training method led to Su-cheol and Pyeon-woon.
Through a critical review of the existing perception, this paper presented the ideological characteristics of Silsangsan school and the unresolved challenges related to the succession of Hong-cheok’s Seon training method. In particular, by raising the limitations of the primary data, errors in interpretation by previous researchers, the formation of Silsangsan school, and the issue of its identity, a task was presented on how to approach the research on Seon thought of the Nine Mountain Seon schools in the future.
