      The usage of the CO₂ water heater has been increased due to its environmental friendly characteristics and the higher water temperature compared to that of conventional refrigerant. Also, it has lower running cost and higher system efficiency compared to the gas-fired water heater. In this study, the basic design for the Co2 water heater of which the compressor power consumption of 10HP is conducted. The CO2 water heater is composed of a compressor, a gas cooler, an expansion device, an internal heat exchanger(IHX), and a water reservoir tank .The mass flow rate, the discharge temperature and the pressure were calculated by using the efficiency model of the compressor. The rotation speed and the sweep volume for the compressor is obtained from the Dorin semi-hermetic 8㎾ compressor. The gas cooler and the IHX were designed by the ε-NTU method, which is applied to the finite volume. The capacity of them was calculated through the CO2 mass flow rate and the assumed inlet and outlet temperature. The evaporator was designed by the EVAP-COND under the various outside temperatures.
