Korean Art Education: Cultural Diversity and Globalization

In the twentieth century, globalization was carried along global channels of cultural flow, occurring with the rise of the West and impacting the rest of the world. Globalization is extending the range of imagery and information, and tourism, which has effectively eaten away national boundaries. However, what we may miss is that when people draw global influences into their lives, there will always be interplay between global and local influences. Interpenetration between global cultural flows and local cultural patterns are central to the continuing process of globalization. First, this study draws attention to cultural differences between local cultural patterns in Korea and those created with the rise of globalization. Second, the study discusses culture- and art educational policy in the new environment of border dwellers, migrations, and indigenous community memberships. Finally, this study examines how higher art education can play a role as a cultural institution during the era of globalization.
