문명, 창조적 긴장, 그리고 아베로에스의 길

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 이슬람철학자 아베로에스가 서양의 기독교 문명과 동양의 이슬람 문명 사이의 만남에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지에 초점을 맞춘다. 그는 아리스토텔레스의 저술들에 대한 주해서를 집필함으로써 중세의 공인된 ‘주석가’라는 명칭으로 회자되기도 했지만 아리스토텔레스에 대한 해석이 상당부분 종교의 교의와 충돌을 일으킴으로써 이슬람 세계는 물론 기독교 세계에까지 불온한 사상가라는 오명을 입기도 했다.
아베로에스는 이슬람적인 ‘자기’와 철학적인 ‘타자’ 사이의 관계를 재정립하는 과정에서 종교의 진리와 아리스토텔레스에게 근간을 두는 철학의 진리 사이에 괴리가 일어나지 않는다고 주장한다. 필자는 이런 주장에 주목함으로써 서로 이질적인 문명들 간의 만남이 ‘차이의 권리’를 인정하는 데서 출발해야 한다는 아베로에스의 논지를 드러내고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to deal with the question how the great Islamic philosopher, Averroes influenced on the encounter of civilizations. In the Christian and Jewish worlds, Averroes was renowned for his important commentaries on Aristotle since these left a deep impression on the scholastics in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. However, his commentaries held views unacceptable to Orthodox Christians and caused much perplexity for them since many of Averroës’s theories ran counter to the Christian beliefs. For this reason, Averroes is considered as a radical freethinker who criticized religions including Islam.
I wish to argue that Averroes attempted to re-establish the relationship between religion and philosophy, which involved redefining the relationship between the Islamic ‘I’ and the philosophical ‘Other’. He did not maintain that one taught by religion and one taught by philosophy, could both be true at the same time because one truth does not contradict another, but becomes reconciled with it, bearing witness in its favour.
