This report from the World Health Organization (WHO), published in 2007, summarises the findings of a WHO scientific group on the assessment of osteoporosis at primary health care level, which met in Brussels, Belgium, on 5-7 May 2004. The aim of the meeting was to review the scientific basis for the identification of patients at high or low risk of osteoporotic fracture with or without the use of bone mineral density (BMD) measurement and to optimise the detection of high risk patients so that therapy could be better directed. The report includes statistics on the estimated numbers of osteoporotic fractures, notes on models for assessment of risks, conclusions and recommendations for future research.
