The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of ecological variable of the mothers of the dual-income family, which has been growing sharply, to the stress of child-bearing is studied, and cause and state of the stress is analysed to provide the basic data for the parenting of the mothers.
For this, goals of the study were as follows:
First, how big is the stress of the mothers of the dual-income family?
Second, how severe is the stress associated with ecological variable?
Third, how much effect does the ecological variable of the mothers have on the parenting stress of the mothers.
The subjects of this study were 237 mothers of children under 6 years, who are attending public or private full-day kindergarten in Seoul.
The implements used in this study is a parenting stress standard adjusted and supplemented according to the goal of this study on the basis of one developed by Ki-hyung Kim and Hee-kyung Kang(1997) and adjusted and supplemented by Eun-hui Jung(2002) and Hae-jin Kim(2004).
The data collected for this study was analysed by SPSSWIN 12.0 programme. Frequency Analysis was performed to find out general properties of respondents, and reliability analysis of each questions about parenting stress, organismic variable, microsystem variable, mesosystem variable, and macrosystem variable was performed, examining the expectability and accuracy. And reliability between questions was estimated by Cronbach‘s alpha. A descriptive analysis was performed to find out the mean and standard deviation for parenting stress, organismic variable, microsystem variable, mesosystem variable, and macrosystem variable, and correlation analysis was performed to find out the relation between ecological variable and parenting stress of the mothers. And hierarchical regression analysis was performed to find out the effect of ecological variable on parenting stress of the mothers. The empirical analysis of this study was examined in significance level of .05.
Major findings of this study were as follows:
First, in the analysis of stresses of the mothers, the highest stress was one from sense of guilt about parenting by other person, and one from role of mother and one from everyday affairs was followed in that order. The mean of the stresses was 2. 84.
Second, in the analysis of ecological variable-associated stress, characteristic finickiness was the highest stress in organismic variable, happiness in childhood was the highest one in microsystem variable, satisfaction of parenting was the highest one in mesosystem variable, and equalized view of the role of parents was the highest one in macrosystem variable.
Third, in the analysis of effect of ecological variable on parenting stress, among ecological variable, parenting stress had significant correlation with character of child, a microsystem variable(r =.200, p<.001), and very significant correlation with view of the children, a macrosystem variable(r =.405, p<.001). But it didn't have significant correlation with mesosystem variables in significance level of .05.
In the analysis of the effect of ecological variable on parenting stress, the stress increased as the parents had better academic record and lower functionality. The more finicky the character was, the higher the stress was. The mothers who had more children had higher stress. And finicky children caused higher stress for their mother. Besides, the lower the satisfaction of parenting was, the higher the stress was. And, the higher the expect for the children was, the higher the stress was.
