The purpose of this study is to examine William Carlos Williams long epic Paterson and to analyze its theme of the overcoming of alienation and the pursuing of beauty through the symbol of the city Paterson The poet tries to reach the general universal quality out of the particular concrete materials As local materials he uses the city Paterson, Garret Mountain the Passaic River the Passaic Falls, and so on But all these materials go beyond their local quality and embody the universal symbols in the meaning Especially the city Paterson creates the most important symbolic meaning in the poem Patenson is not only the hero, the heroine, but also a city cliffs, and a waterfall Williams throughout his poem has given the city a life organic as a man's life Thus he has much to say mostly about language things, women, divorce poetic language and the poem as a field of action He pointed out this 'divorce' poignantly and, further, made efforts to show the way to overcome it He did it by lifting up this 'contact' to the level of 'interpenetration' between the subject and the object, he presented in his poems an ultimate possibihty of overcoming divorce After he overcame the alienation by divorce, he pursued the 'beautiful thing' through his poetic world Paterson.
