The folk art forms are many and exotic in nature. The special hallmark of Indian dance forms are the seven classical dance forms namely Kathak from the north, Manipuri and Odissi from the south.
All these dance forms have originated from the Natashastra or the science of dance forms have originated from the Natashastra or the science of dance which came into existence before 3000 years.
Bharatanatyam is the most ancient among classical dance forms. It mention has been found in the literary works during the period form 500 B.C-500 A.D, proving its antiquity. During 10th century A.D it developed widely in the southern state of India Tamilnadu. This dance from was practised by the "devadasi" community as it was a temple dance and these dancers were servants to god - the "chola" and the "Pallava" dynasties patronized this art form to a great extent. Bharatanatyam at this stage was called Dasiattam. The name Bharatanatyam is more recent. This term Bharatanatyam means - a confluence of expressions, melody and rhythm flowing into stream of dance.
