‘미디어혁명’이 파괴한 ‘위선의 제도화’ = 커뮤니케이션의 관점에서 본 ‘트럼프 현상’

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 미국 대통령 선거의 공화당 후보인 도널드 트럼프(Donald J. Trump)가 연출해 온 새로운 종류의 포퓰리즘을 가리키는 ‘트럼프 현상’을 탐구한다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같이 몇가지로 요약할 수 있다. ‘트럼프 현상’의 근저엔 지난 40년간 미국 사회를 지배한 ‘정치적 올바름(Political Correctness)’과 그에 따른 ‘위선의 제도화’, 그 토양 위에서 구축된 ‘플랫폼 정치’와 ‘정치적 양극화’에 대한 강한 집단적 불만, 그리고 이 불만을 행동으로 현실화시킬 수 있게 한 ‘미디어 혁명’이 있었다. 트럼프는 이 조건들을 이용해 보수 및 중도 부동층 유권자들이 가장 큰 불만을 느끼는 일자리와 이민, 테러, 금권정치, 월가(Wall Street), 외교, 언론 등 6대 이슈에 독설과 막말을 집중하는 전략적 커뮤니케이션을 통해 오늘의 위치에 오르게 됐다. ‘정치적 올바름’을 크게 훼손하는 트럼프의 막말은 기성 언론의 격렬한 비판과 반대를 초래했지만, 이는 트럼프의 위상에 별 영향을 미치지 못했다. 기성언론을 불신하면서 SNS 등의 뉴미디어에 의존한 유권자들은 그걸 트럼프의 메시지에 비해 비교적 사소하게 보거나 진정성의 증거로 여겼기 때문이다. 이런 연구 결과에 근거해 본 논문은 “‘미디어혁명’이 파괴한 ‘위선의 제도화’”라는 주장을 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the ‘Trump Syndrome’, a new kind of populism which Republican candidate Donald J. Trump has displayed in the American presidential election. The findings can be summarized as follows. The foundations of the syndrome were the ‘political correctness’ and the ensuing ‘institutionalization of hypocrisy’ that have dominated the American society for the last forty years, the strong collective discontentment caused by ‘platform politics’ and the ‘political polarization’ that were constructed by the foregoing condition, and the ‘media revolution’ that could actualize the collective discontentment. By taking advantage of these conditions, Trump used strategic communications largely composed of invective and hate speech focusing on the six issues that conservatives and the uncommitted swing voters in the middle were most dissatisfied: jobs and immigration, terror, plutocracy, Wall Street, diplomacy, and the press. This has made it possible for Trump to become a presidential hopeful. Although Trump’s hate speech, bringing the political correctness into contempt, has caused a storm of criticism and opposition of the established press, this did not hurt at all Trump’s competitiveness as a presidential candidate. The reason is that voters, who distrust the established press and depend on the new media like SNS for judging the electoral process, trivialized the controversy in comparison with Trump’s real messages, or regarded it as an evidence of Trump’s authenticity. Based on these findings, this paper suggests a theme of ‘the institutionalization of hypocrisy’ destructed by ‘media revolution’.
