아시아계 미국문학에서 초국가적/반구적 라틴 아메리카 읽기 ―중국인 노동자들, 일본인 이민자들, 한국인 마킬라도라 비즈니스맨―

국문 초록 (Abstract)

캔디스 추는「반구와 다른 영역에 대해: 카렌 테이 야마시타의 문학 세계를 항해하기」 를 통해, 비록 아시아계 미국 문학이 최근 10년간 쉘리 피쉬킨이 동시대 미국학을 묘사했던“초국가적 방향전환”의 입장을 취했지만,“이산적인”또는“환태평양 지역학”등의 분야에서 보여주었던 견인력과 같은“반구학”에 대한 특정한 지시문은 찾지 못했다고 아쉬워하면서 아시아계 미국문학에 대한 반구적인 접근을 시도하고 있다. 전통적으로 아시아계 미국문학은 북 또는 남을 비평적으로 보기보다 동서관계에 막혀 있었기 때문에 불변의 이국성과 마찬가지로 아시아성이 인종화되었다는 것이다. 따라서 미국에서 아시아인들의 인종화의 역사는 아시아 국가들과 밀접하게 관련되어 있기 때문에, 게리 오키로가 아시아계 미국학에서 초국가주의를 아시아계 미국인 역사에 대한 “동-서 필라멘트”로 묘사한 것은 일리가 있다. 그렇다면, 아시아계 미국문학에서 “아메리카”를 더욱 넓게 해석해야 한다는 것은 어떤 의미일까? 초국가적 아시아계 미국학의 전통적인 동-서 초점에 대해 반구학의 북-남 축이 더해질 때 영향력은 어떠한 것일까? 반구학이 아시아계 미국인들의 텍스트 안과 밖 사이의 관례적인 범위 사이의 새로운 연관성 잇기를 한다면 어떠할 것인가? 그 주제는 아마도 아시아계 미국인들의 캐리비언, 라틴 아메리카 또는 아메리카 대륙(the Americas)내의 경계를 넘나드는 글쓰기와의 관계를 포함할 수 있을 것이다. 초국가적 관점에 기반하여 반구학적 인식을 더 하는 것은 북미를 넘어 중남미 라틴아메리카를 무대로 한 아시아계 미국문학 텍스트의 연구에 중요한 통찰을 제공한다. 본 연구는 그동안 아시아계 미국문학 연구 분야에 있어서 북미 배경 편향에서 벗어나고자 아시아계 미국 작가에 의해 최근에 발표된 작품 중, 라틴아메리카를 지리적 배경으로 초국가적 이동의 역사를 다루고 있는 루던 럼 맥컨의 『행운의 신』, 카렌 테이 야마시타의 『브라질 마루』, 크리스티나 가르시아의 『여성 투우사의 호텔』을 고찰한다.

This project seeks to expand Asian American studies and Asian North American studies to the Latin America and Caribbean by examining Ruthanne Lum McCunn’s God of Luck (2008), Karen Tei Yamashita’s Brazil Maru (1992), Cristina Garcia’s The Lady Matador’s Hotel (2010). I argue that these writers represent Asian transnational diasporic experiences by reconstructing Asian migration history to the Americas. Engaging in a hemispheric study of the Asian Migration to the Americas, this project also contributes to recent scholarship on diasporic studies as it challenges the conventional categorization of global diasporas, specifically Chinese diaspora as diaspora of trade, and destabilizes the homeland/hostland binary with an account of the secondary migrations within the Americas. As there are not many published writers of Asian ancestry in these regions, Asian diasporic literary studies in the Americas needs not only to continue to unearth Asian diasporic writers but also to adopt a non-essentialist approach by examining representations of Asian experiences by writer of other race and ethnicity like Cristina Garcia.
