Foster care experience can often be trying for children in that they are separated from their birth parents and placed in whole new environments where they should adjust to new families and form new parent-child relationships for certain periods of time.
Among major factors that affect personality development of a foster child is his/her attachment with main caregiver. Once a secure and close caregiver-child attachment is formed, the foster child gets to find comfort and build trust, developing positive self-esteem and self-control capability. Caregiver need to understand individual traits of each foster child and gain proper understandings of the process through which children come to develop capacity to form attachments with their foster parents, as well as childcare skills to help the children successfully adjust to lives with their foster families.
The aim of this study is to give sensible childcare suggestions for foster care services by looking into how attachment classification in foster children and characteristics of caregiver influence the foster children's personalities.
This study of foster children aged 12-17 years in Busan was conducted to find out how their attachment patterns and the characteristics of their caregiver have affected their personalities. The following are the conclusions of this study:
First, the study, against the backdrop of a significant lack of research of its kind, focused on attachment classification in foster children, classifying attachment patterns and examining each of these patterns' effect on children's personalities. Children with secure attachment showed higher self-esteem and emotional stability while those with insecure attachment showed higher level of aggression. Since attachment between foster children and their caregiver as well as the quality of their relationships play a key role in formation and development of children's personalities, forming positive attachment is very important.
Second, the study has found out that characteristics of caregiver can also affect foster children's personalities such as self-esteem, self-satisfaction, emotional stability, dependency, world view and aggression. It was once again confirmed that caregiver-child relationship in a foster family is significantly associated with the development of a child in care. With a large number of children in Korea put in the care of their relatives, this study could provide a fresh approach to such form of foster care as well.
Lastly, I hope this study on attachment classification in foster children and characteristics of caregiver can make a valuable contribution to designing new specialized programs for positive personality development of foster children, both preventive and corrective.
